Some countries have changed or tightened their abortion laws. Does anyone have any statistics or references on whether women still have abortions?

Worldwide, some 20-30 million legal abortions are performed each year, with another 10-20 million abortions performed illegally. Illegal abortions are unsafe and account for 13% of all deaths of women because of serious complications. Death from abortion is almost unknown in the United States or in other countries where abortion is legally available.

Yes, they do. Here before Roe v. Wade, there were 1.2 million abortions each year. All of them were back-alley abortions done by men who weren't doctors. Annually, 110,000 women die each year according to the World Health Organization from illegal abortions. Making abortion illegal isn't going to stop abortions, it will only kill the woman. There was a case about a girl in Indiana, her last name was Bell. She wanted to get an abortion but because she was a minor so she needed parental notification. She didn't want her parents to know so she went to a back-alley butcher. He performed the abortion but she died to a hemorrhage caused by dirty instruments. Her parents were shocked and angry at the state for having that law of parental notification. Even if abortions are illegal, women will still get them.

In India, abortion is illegal, but 'dowry deaths' (thew aborting of female fetuses upon gender dtermintation) is a unique problem. They don't call them 'abortions' and they don't go to 'clinics' per se...I'm sorry I don't have the proper lingo for you, but they refer to it as something else...and as a result, no TRUE statistics can be quantified. I will think a bit more about it and see if I can conjure up that exact language. OK, here is an example
In other countries, menstrual extraction is referred to as "menstrual regulation." According to the National Abortion Federation, "in the developing world, menstrual regulation is still a crucial strategy to circumvent anti-abortion laws." Although abortion is illegal in Bangladesh, the government has long supported a network of menstrual regulation clinics.[8][9] It is estimated that 468,000 menstrual regulaions are performed each year in Bangladesh. [10] NAF also reports "some other countries allow menstrual regulation because it presumably takes place without a technical verification of pregnancy." [11] It is claimed such countries include Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Vietnam. [12] In Cuba, where abortion is legal, menstrual regulation is widely practiced--every woman whose period is two weeks late is offered menstrual extraction, without a pregnancy test. [13]

Yes. Women still have abortions when they are illegal. If you look at the 1970's you can see that. Thousands of American women died from illegal abortions every year.

And I don't know if you know who Vera Drake is, but she was arrested for performing illegal abortions. Abortion is always going to happen so we might as well and make it safe.

Of course they do. Thats why I wonder why the fight to make it illegal is so popular in the US. Illegal abortions led to sterility and infections so doctors lobbied to make it legal and the problems of sterility and infections went way down. I can only suppose that to some people the reproductive life of a woman is less important that the idea of a collection of cells. If you don't believe in it, don't have one, but if you do it should be done as safely as any other procedure.

They always have and they always will, no matter how many idiot laws are passed. The number of illegal abortions declined only in those countries that made it legal. Everywhere else, the numbers have remained the same or increased.

Of course they do.

Women trying to end and prevent pregnancy has been documented as far back as 3000 years ago in ancient China. Ditto for Rome, Greece, Egypt.

The difference is that more women die trying to abort the pregnancy when abortions are illegal.

women wiill get abortuions whether or not it's legal. If it's not legal, that just means they have to turn to backroom abortionists, and don't get the proper medical care that they should. It's their body, it's their call, as long as it's in the first trimester. After thta...too late!

there are all kinds of drunken back alley doctors with rusty clothe hangars taking care of illegal abortions, the religious right dont care about that though, they feel like they are powerful being able to control people like breed stock.
