"Baby Boomers" is the catch-all phrase given to the generation of babies born soon after the men came home from fighting in World War II. These men just wanted to find a decent job and raise a family and forget the horrors of wartime events.
The birth of a child was a wondrous confirmation that life does go on. And that is why there were so many babies being born in that time period. As that generation grew, more schools were built, bigger colleges, all to accomodate the sudden influx of that boomer generation.
And yes, one that was born in 1956 is still a boomer.
