I don't' play runescape, but I play another on line game- but the general social interaction is the same.
I know that people love to "pwn n00bs". but you can find people who are willing to help you.
Try looking for a guild that is open to new players. Some guilds are fighting to get new members, and they may be willing to help you to show you they want you as a member.
It may not be a bad thing to let people know you are new to the game. People who have high- level characters or have things that only an established account should have are expected not to commit in-game mistakes.
If they think you are an experienced player they may mistake your innocence for arrogance, and then REALLY treat you badly.
I will take a willing beginner over an arrogant expert any day.

Oh man! A bit too late. I just gave mine away (lvl 54) to some kid I saw at the library. But I now evolved from runescape to MapelStory.
