my biopsy came back saying that i have precancerous cells (cervical cancer), and at first my gyno said i would have the cryotherapy, then when i made the appointment her nurse said i would be having a colposcopy. (next wednesday) has anyone ever had this done, and what all does it include? thanks so much in advance, i'm really freaking out.

I had a bad pap when i was pg with my daughter who is now 14. They laser the cervix and all was taken. I had to get a pap every six mo for a couple of years but everything worked out good. Don't be worried. My doctor described it to me like moss growing on a rock. He must of been right cause it has been 14+ yrs...good luck to you!

A colposcopy is a visual examination of the cervix--a relatively simple and painless procedure, usually performed in your physician's office.

A colposcope is an instrument that shines a light on the cervix and magnifies the view for your doctor. At the beginning of the exam, you lie back and place your feet in the stirrups as you would for a Pap smear. Your doctor inserts a speculum into your vagina and opens it slightly so he or she can see your cervix. Then your doctor applies a vinegar solution to the cervix and vagina with a cotton ball or swab. The vinegar makes abnormal tissue turn white so your doctor can identify areas that may need further evaluation.

If your doctor sees areas of abnormal tissue during the colposcopy, he or she may also perform a biopsy. This involves removing small samples of tissue from any abnormal areas in or around the cervix. A specialist doctor called a pathologist will examine these samples.

It usually only takes 20 to 30 minutes for your doctor to complete a colposcopy and biopsy.

Preparation for a colposcopy is similar to preparing for any gynecological exam.

You should schedule an exam when you are not menstruating.

Avoid douching, sexual intercourse, vaginal medications, and tampons for 24 hours before the exam.

If you are not allergic to acetaminophen (Tylenol, Panadol), your doctor may recommend taking some for pain 1 hour before the procedure.

Don't worry, it should be a breeze!

well 1st of all if you had a biospy that came out positive for cancerous cells that means you have had already had a colposcopy that is when they took the sample of the cells.Next step would be cryotherapy where they try to remove the cancerous part. They actually freeze off the cancerous cells or as much as they possibly can.So I think you have already had a colpo or if not then that have must been your pap test with abnormal cells and then that would require you get a colpo. You really need to find out what it is that is begin done to your body. Both of this procedures are out patient and pretty quick but also painful. So talk your GYN provider because cancer is very serious!!!!

I had pre-cancerous cells as well, but did not have that particular procedure don; I had the LEEP. However, if I am not mistaken, that is when they freeze the cells. With the LEEP, they burn the cells.
