I'm clueless when it comes to football. All my friends have a favorite team and I feel excluded. I have no idea the positions in the game or what that position's job is. I also want to know the teams in football.
Help.

It's very difficult to explain a sport like football in a forum like this. There are far to many rules and objectives that take place so it can't be simplified. I really think the best way to learn the game is to sit with people that know the game while they are watching and ask questions. Be sure you are watching in someones home and not at a noisy sports bar where it's difficult to pay close attention. With all of the college bowl games going on and the NFL playoffs starting, now is the most exciting time to learn. Good Luck and if you don't have a team to root for, as a life long JETS fan I welcome you to root for a team that can use all the fans that are out there.

althoug football can get very complicated it is basically a game split into four quarters, 15 minutes each, where two teams try to score against each other. it is started by a coin toss to see who kicks first then one team kicks to the other and the game begins. The goal is to score a touchdown which is done by moving the ball down the field, whether passing or running without the defense(other team) stopping you. There are four downs to play to reset the downs you must move the ball 10 yards after the fourth down the other team gets the ball. if you score a touchdown it is 6 points, then yo have a chance for extra points, you can either kick for 1 point or try to get back into the end zone(goal) for two points. If you can't make a touchdown you might try to kick a field goal which is worth 3 points. if you get tackled in the opposite end zone from where you are heading it is a safety the other team gets 2 points plus you must kick them the ball. that is the basics. as far as teams there are two major leagues, the ncaa(college) and the nfl(professional) of which you must pick a favorite. you will have to watch football to rightly choose your team, my favorites are the florida gators and the san fransisco 49ers, be careful not to be a wagon jumper(go for the winning team every season) people will not like you. anyway have a great day to see list of all teams you can go to nfl.com and ncaa.com

First of all the most important thing is you need your favorite team, go with 49ers. Niners have so many super bowls, hopefully they'll win one in the next 5 years.

Second of all, watch ESPN, that will give you enough edge to chat with your friends about Football.

Third, watch a few games. How about start with the Independence Bowl with Alabama vs Oklahoma on ESPN (starts in another 30 minutes).

Football is really a game you learn by just watching with somebody knowledgeable that can explain it to you little by little.....But you can Go to NFL.COM.......You can find things from rules, history, teams, player stats etc........But again its a game you just have to keep watching to understand......Its a very complex but wonderful game....I love it so much.....
Also a really good book for Women is : Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm watching the game By Holly Robinson Peete....I bought it awhile back and found it cool even though Ive been watching football since I was a little girl....You can always learn more.......

There is too much for anyone to tell you here. What you should do is, watch a game with someone who knows the sport well. Also study the rules, this will help you understand the calls the referee makes. Good Luck and welcome to FOOTBALL!

you can start by watching a whole football game but even reading all the rules somewhere wont really help. reading the rules and watching continuously and listening to people that know what they're talking about would help. and loving the game is not bad either.

well if you're wondering what team to root for and you really don't care what team you're rooting for then pick your local team!
For example if I was from Elkridge,MD and I ddint know hat team to root for then I would probably wanna root for the WASHINGTON REDSKINS or the BALTIMORE RAVENS
