Of course a bed is very important, because you HAVE to have something to sleep on and if nothing else you can sit on it too. The most important things to have, bare minimum, is a trashcan/trash bags, shower liner, towels, pots and pans, dish drainer(unless you have a dishwasher), dish soap, plates, knives/utensils, sponges/dishrags, and anything that has to do with your normal daily routine. You can usually go to a second hand store such as Goodwill or Salvation Army (don't be ashamed, especially when starting out) and get a couch for $100-200.. and if you are lucky, sometimes in nice neighborhoods people leave perfectly good furniture on the side of the road! If you are on a budget don't be too proud to accept hand-me-downs!

The Salvation Army and Goodwill stores are great for bargain furniture if you can find things that aren't to beat up, and there are slip covers to fit over anything. Don't forget friends and family, there's always someone with a table, a lamp, an old sofa they are looking to get rid off. Of course you'll need a mattress and box spring, couch (futons are cheap and work as both). Something to sit your TV on, stereo or anything else, and a decent table. You have plenty of time to get good furniture and accumulate stuff. Start out with the essentials.Stop at every yard sale you can find! Good luck!

Used furnishing are good. When I moved out on my own, I would stalk the rummage sales and estate sales in nicer part of town. You'll be amazed at what people throw out if they are doing a full basement remodeling. I picked up a 27" tv and a nice sofa sleeper.

Only thing I wouldn't recommend buying used is your mattress.

Get a living room and a bathroom. Even though you don't have a bed you still have a couch and when people walk in they'll say "nice house" without know that you dont have anyother rooms. And having a bathroom is an obvious reason.

You may want to try freecycle in your area. You can get a lot of good furnishings for FREE on there!

all you NEED is someplace to sleep and some place to sit.

SO a bed, and a chair

try signing up for the local freecycle in your community to get hand-me-down furniture for your first pad. (google on Freecycle and your city name)
