My due date is january 19 and the doctor said that she will induce the labor so i can have it on January fifith. My question is do you know particularly why they induce labor and if it is okay for them to do that. I heard it makes your contractions worse.

they induce labor when the mother's body is not doing well or the baby is not doing well, etc. it's only done when the appropriate time presents itself, usually within 1-2 wks before your delivery date and only if the baby can survive outside of the womb. if you get an epidural, you won't notice the difference. if you're nervous or scared, talk to your obgyn before this is done. good luck and God bless.

My first was induced because my water broke early and it was definitely worse. My labor was much harder and much longer (16 hrs hard labor) than my second.

My second one was not induced. Still strong contractions but not near as strong but the overall labor was only about 5 hours

Don't be induced if there's no good reason for your Dr. to do it early

They had me induce and right after they give the medicine, the epidural went in at the same time. (I requested the epidural from the beginning) And I don't think the contractions was worse.
They induced me because I was almost 42 weeks.
The doctor must have a very good reason to do that to you. You can always ask he or she if you need more info.

i would seriously do some reading on inductions. and on the negative side effects they can have. the drugs they give you can make you have much stronger contractions and that can hurt the baby as well as the negative effects the actual drug has on the baby. it still is getting whatever is in your system until the cord is cut. there is alot of info out there on the web about why not to have your labor induced. its better to just wait. unless of course you have a medical condition that is making it dangerous. but the main thing is that your body and your baby knows when its ready and when its time so you should have faith in yourself. another thing that would worry me about having an induction is that it increases your chances for having to have an emergency cesearean section which is a major surgery.
anyways, good luck and i hope you have a wonderful birth!

Many doctors now induce labour for their convenience. In my opinion labour should only be induced if the baby is overdue or if there's a problem that requires the birth to happen quickly.
Induced labour does tend to be shorter and the contractions are more painful. However you should have the option of an epidural or other medication to make things more bearable.

Let me see - she wants to induce for no medical reason? That is crazy. It is also potentially dangerous for both you and your baby. Unfortunately induction for convenience has become almost routine, and the results are an epidemic of premature and low birth-weight babies, cesareans that could have/should have been avoided, respiratory problems in babies, etc. etc.

You should read up on inductions and then go back and talk to your doctor. You should demand an explanation that makes sense to you. If you don't get it - JUST SAY NO! You do have the right to do that! It is your body, your birth, YOUR BABY!

I'm wondering why your dr is inducing you before your due date. did she tell you why??
usually, you want to let the pregnancy go until it's full term, 38-39 wks or even 40 wks, but most drs will induce a labor if it goes beyond 41-42 wks b/c that;s when complications can occur. the placenta can start to shut down and can stop producing amniotic fluid, could stop nourishing the baby. the baby could start to overdevelop, like webbed toes and fingers, etc.

are you breech?? is that why she is inducing you early??

ask some questions to your dr. as for inducing causing more pain....i doubt it.
every labor is different and no one can really say whether that's true or not.
besides, if you're worried about pain, then do what many women do....get the epidural! i did and my labor and delivery were a breeze. seriously, i was playing cards and watching tv. they woke me up and checked my dilation and asked me if i wanted to push, i did and 15 min later my little boy was born!!!

take care and always ask your dr any questions you may have!

Don't know about the "making contractions worse" thing, but normally doctors will induce if there is some sort of danger to the baby or mother, or if the baby is significatly over due. More recently, though, doctors have started giving parents the option of chosing their baby's birth day assuming it is not too far from the predicted delievery date. If you want to know why your doctor is doing it for you and the potential risks involved, I would ask your doctor ASAP.

Well...why are they inducing early? Is the baby breech? Inducing can be more painful because the pitocin acts to strengthen contractions. Making them worse. If you go that way, you might want an epidural.

inductions could be because the baby is big and they don't want it to get bigger. My mother was induced because she didn't want to deliver a 10 pound baby. There are many reasons to get an induction. Inductions are so common nowadays! They wouldn't do it if it wasn't ok! If you have cervadil placed it may make contractions worse, but if they get too bad, they will take it out. Don't worry, they are doctors, they are the ones who know what they are doing. Not some random people on yahoo.

There are several reasons for inducing labor... the baby is too big, you don't have enough amniotic fluid, your placenta is tearing etc. You will have to ask your doctor why she wants to do it in your case.
Your baby will be 38 weeks by then, which is full term, so there should be no problem. My sister-in-law had labor induced and everything went fine for her. Good luck with your baby.
