The differences between Win 98 and XP are numerous. They use completely different source code. Win XP is based on source code of Win NT. It uses an NTFS partition or FAT32. Win 98 does not recognize NTFS partitions. Win XP runs much more stable than 98 ever did. It has superior error correction, runs faster than 98 does. Also something to bear in mind is that Win 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so getting the latest updates could become an issue. Also the latest software may not be compatible with Win 98.

Windows 98 is much smaller and uses way less system resources (such as RAM) than XP does. All software made today for Windows machines can be used in windows XP but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anything new that is made to run in Windows 98. However, there are things (primarily classic games) that you cannot run in XP no matter what you do. XP does have compatibility modes and programs such as dosbox that you can get from the internet to help you run windows 98 games in XP but in the end, some old games only work/only work well in 98.

Also, people target XP when making viruses/etc. Windows 98 is regarded by Leo Laporte the tech guy (from techTV and host of the #1 tech radio show and #1podcast show which is in over 30 countries now) as becoming more secure due to its own obseleteness. I have a powerful Windows 98 computer that is and has been virus free for years. It's on the internet right now! I also have a windows xp computer that is on the internet right now and it is virus free.

In reality, XP has been updated so much that you can even run it with a firewall and a simple, free antivirus, and being smart about what files you open without noticing any problems for years. I'm on about 2 years now without incident. Also, both operating systems have different looks and feels. Hope that helps answer your question.
