Yes to both questions.

In school, accounting is not an easy major when compared to other business majors or humanities. However it is not as difficult as a science or engineering major. In order to get a job in public accounting, you will almost definitely need a bachelor's degree in accounting.

Most entry-level jobs in public accounting demand a lot of time. At a big 4 firm you could be working 50-60 hours per week, and spending a significant amount of time traveling. There are other opportunities for accounting grads outside of CPA firms, but that is where most people end up initially.

You can absolutely make good money in public accounting. Starting salaries are good: mid $30s to $60s depending on geography and specialty.

It requires hard work, but if you are good you can advance very quickly in a firm.
