Thats a great question. Here In San Diego all signs of Christmas vanish the day after New Years Day. It's as tho someone pulls out a giant plug & Christmas is over.
But when I lived in Chicago the lights twinkled on into mid Jan. Then slowly disappeared a little at a time. You could still find a die hard here & there right up to Valentines Day.
It's a local thing. So just watch what your neighbors do & follow their lead.

You take them down at the end of christmas (12th night).

Obviously Christmas day (25 Dec) is the first day of Christmas, so count on and you'll find Jan 5th is twelfth night.

Jan 5th is the last day of christmas, Jan 6th is the first of epiphany.

They should stay up till Jan 6th its a bad luck thing . I take mine down Jan 2nd but leave something christmassy out till the 6th like cards or Christmas ornament

We tend to take ours down on New years Day - time for change in the house and of course we are off work so have time to fit it in...

i take mine down by the 6th or 7th normally. i like to clean it all before my fellas birthday on the 9th but i have a lot of people on my street who dont take them down they leave them up all year round.... something about if you dont take them down on time you cant take them down at all until the next 12 days of xmas.... something about being unlucky i dont know lol
