Just tell them your busy or something, they'll get the message or move on eventually.

Honesty is the best policy and it would be more rude to just ignore them or block the with no explanation.

If they pop up when you come online you could tell them you are online, but just don't feel like chatting right now or you are busy doing something else on the net. If they keep IMing you after you have stated this, they are the one that is being rude and you have every right to point out that their IMing is disburbing what you are trying to accomplish while you are online.

If you can't muster up the courage to to do the above, you could get a new IM screen name and only tell you close friends what it is, but be sure to tell the friend that told you to start chatting with the person how you feel and not to give out the new IM screen name or have the friend tell the person that they are a little over-zealous with their IMing and they need to back off.

Ok, lets examine this. You met this person online, who seemed cool and now they won't leave you alone and you don't know what to do...um..TELL THEM...don't beat around the bush..if he annoys you, flat out tell him. If his feelings get hurt, oh well, it's better than pandering to him and leading him on. In the long run you will have to axe him anyway, you might as well do it now before this turns into a Fatal Attraction rough draft and you have to get a Real Life.....um..restraining order I mean..a real life restrainging order that is.....I'm sorry, but I really hate when people ask questions that come down to the simple fact that they are too scared to do what needs to be done. We used too have sayings like.."You need to break a couple eggs to make an omelette."..but now Politically correct chickens are using egg beaters and screwing up the whole world by hiding their true feelings behind a mask until they splatter their coworkers brains on the walls of their cubicles because they always hated the fact that they were the only one who didn't get a birthday BJ from the office skank..ok? :D feel the love baby

Well just dont go on that messenger or if there msg comes up dont reply. I mean being honest is most important and eventually your going to have to tell that person you don't want to talk to them. You don't have to say it meanly you could say I am sorry but I don't feel a connection between us or we don't have anything in common so maybe you can find someone else to talk to. Just be honest and straight to the point. It's not like your friends, your still strangers so it shouldn't be a problem telling them that.

Most people sign in as busy or away etc., and ignore the people they don't want to talk to. Everyone else they talk to generally knows whats going on, as they do it to. At first I thought this was rude, even if the person can't figure it out but lots of time I'm on line I have something important to say to one or two people, and don't have the time to be chatting with others. Its the most polite way I can think of to handle the situation.

if some how u get caught and they start talking to you, just log off or stop talking to them.....wait for like a day or so and talk to them and tell them that your having problems with your computer....this can be very annoying and she may not want to talk to u. then u can end it by telling her that you will have to get a new computer or something and then u can block her. she will forget about u. u can also tell her that other people use your computer and just dont reply....then talk to her and say yeah that was someone else. that is a good way to get out of it just sometimes though

If you use Yahoo! Messenger you can set it to where you appear offline to that person all the time...thus they cannot see you are online but you do not have to block them.

Otherwise, if they contact you and you don't desire to chat with them right then just say you're not up for it right then. Some people can be pushy and want to take up all your online time if they see you are logged in...just let them know you've got other things to do and wish them a good day/evening.

I think you are going to have to be brave and state it like it is.
I would prefer not getting into a discussion with you I hope you don't mind. I am sorry but I don't want to talk.
Or go the other way and block them w/o being rude.
The person doesn't have to know that you are on line if you block him w/o his knowing
Being open may hurt him but at least he will know that you wish not to talk anymore.

Good luck this is a hard one.

If you don't respond to that person, they will get the hint very quickly. I know that may be rude but there really isn't any other way in this case, without actually coming out and telling the person you don't want to talk to them. I think your best bet is just not answer them, while you're online.

Either ignore them or politely say, "I'm sorry, but I am in the middle of talking to somebody else," or "I can't talk to you right now, but maybe later." If they get mad, so what? If it was me, I would prefer you be honest with me rather than block me or ignore me. Most people should react well to this. If this person doesn't, then who really cares?

Just stop responding. It's that easy. Or, sign on as invisible, so they don't know your on. Or even better, be honest, and tell them that they are getting on your nerves. Sometimes, you have to spell things out for people.
