If you listen to the entire album, listen to the words, "The Wall" tells a story.

Mom runs his life. She tells him how to live, how to act, how to think. She's smothering him.... the song, "Mother".

He gets the same oppression from the schools.... "Hey, teacher, leave us kids alone".

Even from his shrink.... "Comfortably Numb".

Through his strife, he builds a "wall" around himself.... "All in all you're all just bricks in the wall"

Roger Waters started up the concept behind The Wall, when he was thinking about how much he hates his generic fans.

He was talking about how the only reason they come to the concerts is because they want to see someone famous on stage, or something to that point.

They weren't there for the music, they were there to see famous people. And then he thought it would be cool to build a wall between him and the "fans" so that they could only hear the music, and be forced to love the music for what it is. So really... our Wall was built because Roger Waters is a jerk.

Pink Floyd put an explanation of how the album was written on the insert of one of thier CD's. It said that "The Dark Side of the Moon" was a huge hit, and the band was touring a lot of places. They were getting tired of all the crowds, and the fans were wearing them down. Finally, at one of thier concerts, the fans got so wild that the lead singer spit on them. This made him stop and think about what he was doing. He felt so alienated, it made him write all about his life.

It's about a kid growing up and being forced through the fascist public school system in england, rebelling against everything, moving to America, becoming a rock star, living the wild life for a while, realizes that he screwed up (when he tries to call home and his mother is gone), then loses it, becomes a fascist himself, and makes his fans into nazi-like followers.

It's more or less a commentary on how soulless the music industry, and human beings in general have become.

Rodger waters got fed up with how commercial the music business had become and how corporate enterprises had stifled his creativity and tried to force him into making commercial music. the wall was his answer to this.the wall was him trying to put up a barrier between him and the fans due to the large scale success they had found and his own anxiety issues. it also deals with the issues of war, and av-rice(greed). the CD also deals with the bands increasing drug use and issues.(i.e comfortably numb:
O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go."
