My family had a grab bag this year because money was tight. My sister had my name and one of her gifts to me was a gift card to a pet store that I frequent. Well, my family opened gifts first and then ate. I put my gifts in a bag along with the gift card. When I got home, I noticed I did not have the gift card. Now, I have a very shady uncle in my family. I have no proof, but a wierd feeling that he may have stole it. He lives out in the middle of nowhere and has tons of animals that frequent his property. Is there any way that I can find out if the gift card has been redeemed??? My sister thinks she still has the receipt. The gift card was not a huge amount of money, but it is just the principle. It was a Christmas gift and if you can not trust your family...who can you trust?? I just want everyone to know that I looked everywhere and my sister looked everywhere...we were at her house.

I'm sorry. Most gift cards do not have a name attached to it, so if it has been redeemed, there is no way to "get that money back," so to speak. As far as checking on whether it has been redeemed: if your sister has the receipt you should be able to take it to the store and ask them to check the balance (the receipt should have the gift card # on it). If it has not been redeemed most places will allow you to have the balance transfered to a new card, but some will require a fee (perhaps $2).
On an aside, as you do this, I would also ask everyone who was there (yes, including your wonderful uncle) if they happened to have found it in their stuff because it is missing. Replies might lead you in the right direction. If you have the nerve and enough reason, you could also ask your uncle straight out.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Proving it would be up to you.

A convincing story does squat. Playing on emotion does squat.
You need solid evidence.

As for the card being redeemed, every place usually has a customer service call centre that you can call on to see if the card has been activated.

Talking about an uncle being shady living in the middle of nowhere and tons of animals that frequent the property? What the heck does that have to do with anything? Are you trying to defame his character so your story is more believable? Sheesh.

Solid evidence, that YOU have to get, no one can prove it except those looking for proof.

veggie: My advice is to call in the cops on this one. YOU will not be popular for it since the family generally, will support the bad guy. Your Uncle isn't single, living in the back woods, feeding animals and stealing because he's "all there". Your family needs to tell the rat to get some professional help, (may be with the police being involved, this may be the catalyst to start the "ball rolling" ) ! To just sit back and both, say and do nothing, will only leave you more vulnerable for further, thefts by Uncle Weirdo !!!

You lost the gift card. Your uncle may have lifted it. Your sister has the receipt or not. It wasn't for a lot of money.
Well, unless you hate your uncle, or want to hurt him, I'd say NOTHING to him in an accusing manner. Call everyone including him and ask them to look for it because 'you lost it'. Meanwhile go with your sister and the receipt to the store and get a new card. Often we rush to conclusions.... won't you feel awful to accuse him and then it is found say... under the sofa???

I would have my sister contact the Pet Store and inform them of the "lost" card. Also notify them that he "might" be coming to the store to make a "purchase". Notify the family as well, perhaps it "accidently" got put into someone else's bag,but "mistake". I would also confront the Uncle with your sister and someone else present aka Sheriff Deputy of your "gut" instinct. IF he did indeed get it,then I would press charges for theft if I was your sister and yourself. A thief is a thief and should be taught a valuable lesson.

check with the store but i highly doubt you can get anything back on it. i heard this weird thing about how people write card # down then go home and call until they have a balance and when they see someone bought it they go to the store with the card # written and tell the cashier that they lost it and so when the person with the real card goes to use it ......nothing, People sux. Why dont you tell your uncle to go do that not steal yours.

Connect your uncle to a lie detector, and ask him about the problem.

Report it stolen then wait to see who the culprit is. You may be very surprised.

bring up the suject to him forcefully and assertively, and act like you KNOW he took it, and he might admit that he took it.
