It's about finding the person you are meant to be with after a long road of broken hearts and failed relationships. It has been played as first dance at two weddings I 've been to this year.

I don't know the personal story, but I think it means...
Every person we date, every person that breaks our hearts helps us determine what we want in a partner. In a way, our 'mistakes' are the things that help us decide what we want out of life. The road is broken because of the heartache along the way, but is straight because of the decisions that inherently come from those mistakes.
The singer wishes that he could take all that 'wasted' time and spend it with the person he loves... but at the same time realizes that the time wasn't wasted because he wouldn't have found this person without the mistakes!

He wishes the he would have met her sooner so they would have more time left on this earth to spend together. He learned about what he wanted in life through all of his past relationships but they were worth it because those past relationships and how he was living taught him more about himself and what he wanted out of life. He finally found the one he was meant to be with. I also think he is saying that it was God's plan for him.

To my understanding the song is about a person making mistakes in their life but those mistakes helping them be the person they are today and also helping them to find their true love

It means this person was a fool for loves that were not really loves and he finaly realizes one day the true love had been there waiting for him, the day he figuered things out. I haven't heard the song, but these are real nice words!
