I don't want to have to run to the store for another ink pad. I've read that I have to use a solvent based ink.

Some ink pad ink is solvent based, but most is not. What brand do you have? You could google that and see.

You can use a sharpie pen in any color, I know that for sure. Just rub whatever you want to stamp on the plastic with the tip of a sharpie and voila! Instant perma-stamp on the plastic. You could also outline and fill in your own designs right on the plastic that way.

I've used both methods with Shrinky Dink brand plastic and the results have been good. I have not used either method with Shrinkles or other brands of the plastic, though.

I think you can probably use either one (I know pigment ink is okay). The baking and shrinking will actually incorporate the ink or paint, etc.,down into the shrink plastic though and I don't even think they need sealing then ... even watercolors and things can work, I believe, for that reason. Not totally sure though.

Just be sure not to smear those inks/paints that aren't permanent or that might just sit on the top of the plastic, before baking. Also sanding the sheet (both directions) before adding the colorant will give the plastic a little more tooth for holding onto it too.
