Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III used to attend Squirrel Hill Institute of Technology before transferring to Riverdale.

I believe it may not stand for anything at all, but simply be the way he was drawn. The heads at Archie comics have said the story surrounded an issue of Jughead's family having to leave Riverdale because Mr. Jones' job had been transferred. Near the end of the story, Jughead decides to give his "S" sweater to Archie, and is also going to explain the meaning of the "S". However, right at that moment, Jughead's parents come running onto the scene and announce that they've decided not to move after all because it would be so hard on everyone. At that point, Jughead takes his sweater back and says that he'll explain the "S" the next time they have to move...

It is probably just a "S"ecret since so many people have wondered what it stands for. Originally, I don't believe it stood for anything. Some say Samm Schwartz but the "S" predated Schwartz so that cannot be it. I used to love Archie Comics! I still have the stretchable Archie and Jughead figures. =)

Jughead Meaning

I found pictures of Jughead wearing a lot of different shirts. The only common item was his beanie, that he always wore.

Update: In an interview with original Archie artist and creator Bob Montana, he said the S on Jughead's shirt stood for his old school, Squirrel Hill Institute of Technology and he could only use the first letter.

the official website for archie comics says it is a mystery... so it stands for nothing in particular... it's nice to find an official source for once instead of that untrustworthy wikipedia...

''For 60 years, the perennial love triangle between Archie, Veronica, and Betty still exists, the meaning of the "S" on Jughead's shirt still remains a mystery, and Archie is still running afoul into different adventures, much to the heart-warming delight of a new generation of grateful readers, their parents, and their parents' parents.''

In early comics, Jughead is mostly seen wearing a blue turtleneck with a large white "S" on the front. But it has never been explained what, if anything, the "S" stands for. However, historians of January McAndrews' time (see above) have found out Jughead's secret and, she said, "...they were very shocked when they found out", to which Jughead replied, "...but that's my biggest secret." In one story, finally questioned on the issue by Archie and Betty (after complaining that moths have damaged his shirt and eaten through the letter), Jughead reveals that there he simply likes the letter "S" and is "compatible" with it because, in keeping with his obsession with food, "S" stands for soup, sandwich, steak, all kinds of goodies!" A bemused Archie chimes it that it "Also [stands for] silly, simple..." Betty concludes the conversation with "S" stands for "Sorry I asked!"
