Pride and Prejudice

I love everything by Jane Austen, but I'd have to say I think "Emma" and "Mansfield Park" are the most romantic. I love all the matchmaking in "Emma", how Emma resolves never to marry, but ends up falling very deeply in love. In "Mansfield Park" she has to overcome class and her own family in order to realize with whom she is in love.Though "Pride and Prejudice" is very good, and probably Austen's most famous piece, it isn't my favourite, (though I know nearly everyone falls in love with Mr. Darcy when they read it.) The remarkable thing about Austen, is that she remained single her entire life, and yet is considered THE classical romance author. It is quite amazing, really.

Yes, "Emma" and "Mansfield Park" are the most romantic classic novels I can think of.

I agree with all the wonderful classics mentioned, but I must really suggest "Frenchman's Creek" by Daphne du Maurier. It's the tale of forbidden love between a titled English lady and a renegade Frenchman in the 1600s, and is one of the most romantic weepies I've ever read. The sex scene is the most sensual and evocative one I've ever experienced in literature - purely because it is not described - and it had me in tears. Wonderful book!

Jane Austen is the master of the romantic classic. I love "Emma".
Toward the end, it is so heartwrenching, its almost painful. Also read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, as well as The Scarlet Pimpernel.
