I may have a chance to go to San Diego for a conference at the end of March and I'm wondering if I can get away without a rental car (the hotel has free shuttle service to and from the airport). The one thing I really want to see while I'm there is Cabrillo National Monument and I'm wondering if I could bike there from the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina on Harbor Drive. I've been checking out the transit service too.

Although the San Diego area tends to be somewhat biker friendly biking from the Sheraton Hotel (adjacent to the Airport) would not be a viable option riding out to the Cabrillo Nat'l Monument area. The ride may be only 8-10 miles, but it's mostly all on heavy traffic residential areas with little room for bike riders! You can easily bike to the downtown areas or ride the trolley, but the bus system would involve a couple transfers. I'd suggest maybe a 2 hour San Diego harbor boat tour as a far better option along with the trolley if you don't want to pay for a rental car. PS: Your hotel is less than a 1/2 mile from the airport so the shuttle is no big deal!

San Diego is very bikeable, especially for what you have planned.

There are several other great bike trails throughout the city and county. One of the state highways (Route 52), a freeway for cars, is also a dedicated bike route, which is pretty cool.

There is a large bike path that goes from the ocean in Ocean Beach and follows parallel to the San Diego river. A lot of homeless shantys exist along the path, so be careful if you go.

Between the routes themselves and the weather, San Diego is quite 'bikeable'!

Don't listen to the "non-bikers", SD is great for biking! I've been living here for a year and haven't owned a car the whole time. My bike, along with the trolley and buses, get me pretty much everywhere I need to go.

Coming from downtown, San Diego itself has 1 hill that can be a doozy depending on where you ascend it from, and Point Loma will have 1 long hill that's do-able. Other than it's mostly beautiful flat ground.

If all you are doing is staying downtown, then a bike will be fine. If you want to see anything else, you would be miserable on a bike. San Diego is all hills and canyons. You are either coasting down a hill or peddling up one, pretty much all the time. If you pass on the car, you will get the workout of your life.

Well. . .there are many "bikable" spots here and there, but San Diego is enormous. . .using a bike will get you nowhere
