It sends out all the wrong messages - Misogyny, celebration of violence and lack of responsibility with sex to name a few.

Many young impressionable black kids will think it's cool to get into gangs, buy guns, commit violence and show a lack of responsibility with sex(Make a black woman pregnant and abandon them). Rap Music is one of the worst things to happen to the black community and America in my opinion.

Black people should boycott Rap music and put these people out of buisiness. Black people have made great contributions to music over the years- Jazz, Blues, R&B, etc. Rap just destroys all the good work. All it has done is encourage criminal activity.

America without Rap music would be a much better and safer place to live in for both black people and white people. America would also be more productive because there would be less black people joining gangs and more in colleges obtaining degrees.

Rap music just talks about that stuff, people should be given the opportunity to think for themselves and for that free speech is a must

I'm white and my daughter once told me that I was prejudiced against black music as I hate rap music. I pointed out to her that I still have a nice collection of records (that I still listen to) of the Four Tops, the Supremes James Brown, George Benson, Ray Charles, the Platters, Johnny Mathis, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Sam & Dave, all of the early girl groups, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis, Jr., Smokey Robinson and I could keep on writing for probably most of the day. I don't think good music depends on color.

Hey, I'm of Italian hertiage, but I can't stand watching a bunch of fat Italians run around on a stage yelling/singing opera! Other people will say I have no culture, but I don't care.

I am perjudiced against any music that the main topic of the song is killing, beating up women, etc. When Johnny Mathis sang a love song, you sure knew what he was singing about...he didn't have to use the F-word every other word to say what was going to happen.

A lot of rap music just has no class...and writing a song where most of the lyrics are about violence, etc., doesn't take any real talent. Interesting enough, remember what our parents said about Elvis in 1955?

I happen to agree with you. As a young black mother, I do not allow rap to be played in my household. I do not agree with the "safer place to live." Crime is going to be there with or without rap music. My problem is the exploitation of our young black women. I do not embrace the music. Too many black people get thier personalities from the music and videos. Not all blacks listen to rap. A lot of whites and other nationalities listen to it also. If rap was the music that it started out to be with the dancing and skill, then it would be fine, but it has festered like a nasty boil.

I'm a white dude and I like Rap music. The bottom line is this - we all still have personal responsibility over our own lives. What music we listen to isn't going to determine whether we join a gang or obtain a college degree. There are other much more powerful genetic and environmental influences than music. I have a college degree and my music preferences had nothing to do with it.

I could see where you are coming from, but it's not really like that. Not all rap music talks about the things you mentioned. For one thing Rap music is really just a reflection of how most African Americans live on a daily basis, and that's why we embrace it . But not all Rappers rap about that particular thing. I'll admit , music is definitely not what it use to be , but if we don't like it, all we have to do is turn the radio station. Because some rappers like, Kanye West, Nas, Ludacris, and others speak of experience, and don't always talk about sex, drugs, money, and hoes. Rap music is more about experience, and showing how they've come up to what they are, despite their backgrounds.

Gangster rap - I specify because not all rap is negative - is very popular these days. It has been embraced by white youths also. They purchase the music and keep the gangster rappers in business.

Responsible parents will not let there children listen to that type of music. Responsible parents will teach their children about the negative influences of music. Parents of all races should insure that their money do not support such negativity.

Wow. That's a pretty powerful statement. Blacks aren't the only ones who are into rap music. Your blatant response that all rap is criminal, violent, and sexually degrading is extremely closed minded. You don't really know much about rap music, do you? Do you know where hip-hop originated from? Jazz, Blues, (R & B is rhythm and blues, you just named it twice). Rap is included because it's part of the culture. yeah, gangsta rap was a huge part back in the lat 80's and most of the 90's, but one thing that people who listen to ANY type of music is that it's just music. Don't do what they tell you, they're saying it because it sounds cool, and it makes them money. To say it's just rap music is absurd. Media in itself is the problem, not just one genre, and especially not just from music. I suppose you say break dancing is bad because kids are wind-milling on cardboard and could break a bone. I say knock off religious music in America, THAT music corrupts and convinces the youth to follow pointless religions. How closed-minded is that?

This is a joke right? It's so typical for someone to be critical of what they do not understand and it's refreshing to know that YOU have the answer for getting African Americans into college! You get the pat on the back for that. Rap music, as much as you are criticizing it and blaming it for African Americans problems and focusing on African Americans only, you've got "caucasian "rappers" out there too, stealing our expressions like always for the money. Insert quarter and try again.

Why do so many white people worry about what black people are listening to?

1. Not all black people listen to rap

2. Lots of white people listen to rap

3. Not all rap promotes violence and other things you talk about

4. Not all black people join gangs

5. There are plenty of black people in colleges(just because most of them attend HBCU's and not ones that are primarily white

e.g Morgan State, Bowie State, Howard, Morehouse, Clark, (yeah mostly colleges down south)

6. You sound ignorant

7. I've listened to rap music all my life and have never thought about joining a gang because I have parents that taught me well and I can comprehend the difference between music and real life

8. SHUTUP!!!!!!!!!!!1
