This shipping company goes back a long long way. The abbreviations stand for "Peninsular & Orient". In the fifties and sixties , their ships were used to transport UK immigrants to a new life down under. The most famous of these ships was the 'SS Canberra'. Affectionately nicknamed "The Great White Whale" by our British Forces during the Falklands Conflict in 1982 because of her white painted hull. She was requisitioned by the UK Government for the purpose of a hospital ship , being hurridly converted for the purpose , with no time to repaint. She had just came off a world cruise. Sadly , she was broken up at Alang Beach in India in 1997. Most of these ships have brilliant white painted hulls. Another ship was the famous 'SS Uganda'. She was used as an education ship for some lucky students and sailed worldwide. She too was in the Falklands. Again another vessel that was scrapped.. Some of the new vessels are called 'Aurora' and 'Oriana'.
