Car Dude is right. If it's for around the house use, Craftsman will be a fine set and you can add to it as your needs grow. Dewalt is the contractors version of Black and Decker or so I'm told. They will last too. Avoid any no-name brand.

Husky is a private lable of Home Depot I believe. Likey made in China unless marked otherwise. Craftsman is a brand owned by Sears/Kmart, but also sold elsewhere (Fastenal stores) Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Most Craftsman tools are good and the warrenty is good.

Mechanics tend to buy Snap-On and Mac tools, but the main reason for that is that the Snap-On and Mac tool trucks take small payments each week and that works well for mechanics. I don't think their tools are any better.

Another good hand tool brand is SK. You can find those at lots of places.

spend your money on tools that are 'name' brand. mechanics tools like craftsman and husky have good warranties and are good enough for the home owner. if you make your living with your tools get professional brands like snap on, s k, or mac tools. with power tools, ryobi, and dewalt/black and decker are home owner quality, bosch, hitachi, and milwaukee are professional quality. the tools that i need are the best that i can afford, the tools that i use occasionally are good as i need them to be, good enough to do what they were made to do. if i learn that i need better then i end up with a pretty good back up tool.the biggest thing is to shop and compare what more money gets you. sometimes a little more money spent buys a lot more tool, saving in the long run, as you only need to buy the right tool once. hope this helps you decide what you need. good luck, and happy new year!

For hand tools, you can't go wrong with Craftsman. The simple fact is that you can take to tool back to any Sears store and they will replace it for free. With Snap-On and Mac you have to wait for the truck. For powertools, my vote is for DeWalt. I run a rental store and our stuff gets used and abused. We replaced a Bosch hammer drill with a DeWalt, and the DeWalt has out performed the Bosch.

for the professional or average Joe?
Craftsman - Dewalt are the EXACT same thing!!!
Rigid- (Homo-Depot) is good however to get it fixed is a process
(I have a 5 piece tool kit ) that is doing very well (heavy though)
Hitachi- is excellent i have cordless drills that have taken a beatingfor 6 years of cutting 4 inch holes.
Ryobi- i have seen this tool fair well in the plumbing world
Bosch tools are the 5 star by far.
Get something with LITHIUM BATTERIES and you will be appreciated.

For professional tools Snap-on if available in your area, must be purchased from a snap-on dealer.
