Try www.knitty.com -- they have patterns of all difficulty levels and they're cute. The accompanying "coffeeshop" chatboard is very friendly and helpful, too.

crochetpatterncentral and knittingpatterncentral are both good for a variety of patterns, as well as instructions for many techniques.

Also try the Michael's website

Crochet Partners website has some good patterns too. And they are starting a yahoo group. This is a good group and very helpful. They often give websites to check for specific patterns.

The ideas citygal gave are good to get started.

I would also suggest joining a free yahoo group centered on either crochet or knitting. They tend to be separate groups for each craft, rather than lumped together.

The groups often maintain pattern libraries, have links to animated tutorials that clearly show and teach new stitches and also, if you ask nicely, members will give detailed help for new techniques and problems you might encounter while trying to work a free pattern at home.

See the list of groups at yahoo here:

Happy crafting!

Check out craftster.org. It's actually just a huge craft forum, with sub-forums for different crafts...check out their "Completed Project" sections until you see something you like, and see if the pattern is given and/or linked to. Nice way to browse, and much of what is on there is homegrown patterns created by the posters.

Try www.knitty.com or www.magknits.com. They are both free and have excellent patterns for knitting.

So many - but go to crochetpartners.com to start, or projectlinus.org if you'd like some super simple baby patterns.
