Generally, I'd say it depends on your carrier, but where you've specified who your carrier is....
I worked for Sprint as a customer service agent, and NO, they do NOT require it, but... of course they will try to sell you something. Agents are required to offer products, and if you accept one, then you will get a new contract, but if you politely refuse, there is no new contract required.
Here's some more info about Sprint accounts....
Basically, there's 2 kinds of info in your account- Customer info (your name, billing address, your birthday, etc.) and Subscription info. (device model and serial numbers, plans, phone #'s, etc).
Each phone on your account is called a Subscription, each Subscription has 3 basic parts- the device (the actual thing you hold in your hand), the number (the part you are currently thinking of changing), and the plan (how you're billed for what you do). Each one of these parts can be changed without changing the other 2 parts.
As I said, when a customer changes their plan, a contract renewal is required.... it's all about the $$$$. Check with Customer Service to make sure. though. BTW- you can dial *2 and get Customer Care without racking up minutes!!

No. You can change numbers usually over the phone with Customer Care. I have Tmobile and they charge $15 to change numbers. You do not have to start a new contract to change phone numbers with any provider.

no you wont have to start a new contract. they simply change your number and all other things stay the same. they may charge you for changing your number though.

Absolutley not... You only start a new contract if you switch your plan. At least that's how it is with Verizon.
