Does putting more carbon in an out of tank filter help promote bacterial growth, or does it just take up space.
I don't mean that I don't have any in the filter-I have all of what comes in the filter pack, but I'm wondering if it is a good idea to put another pack of carbon in the same filter?

The use of carbon in a filter is, in my opinion over rated. The only time i use carbon in my filters at all is when i need to remove medicine from the water. Carbon may add surface area for bacteria growth, but there are materials that are way better for that. Try some sintered glass or something like that.

this will only help to remove more chemical contaminates. If you want to have more biological filtration than try to put more floss or foam in your filter. Also its good to know that some filters can clog very easily if you have to much media in them. Your best bet would be to get a larger filter if you want to have more bacterial grow. you need to be a little more specific with your questions like what type of filter what size tank and what type of inhabitants you have in your tank.
