Here's a few. The top 2 are ham radio oriented. He may be interested in that. It's easy to get a license and it's a lot of fun.

My husband likes robots. He loves his robosapien toy but wanted to make one or modify it himself, so that it would do something beyond the preprogrammed stuff.

If your person is a beginner, they could get a robosapien, the bigger version (not the toy version that is very small) and hack it to do more.

Google other robo hacks to see more.

At radio shack stores, they often sell beginner tech kits, electronics kits and robotics kits. Some of the skills they teach are soldering, basic electronics systems, circuits, etc.

Amazon.com also has some pretty cool kits for kids as well as adults, such as solar robots, make your own battery kits, etc.

Dick Blick art supplies online has had similar things in the past.

Hobby and train store nearest my home has some of these kits and some are clearly designed for adults--considered ages 14 and up.

Good luck!
