First, read and write as much as possible. The more you read, the more you absorb. Vocabulary, style, syntax, grammar and punctuation--though, honestly, these elements do not a good book make! You should be writing every single day--most successful writers will tell you they do this even to the point of forcing themselves. Next, I suggest you don't write and edit at the same time. Just write what comes to you--be free, and don't criticize and edit yourself as you write. Do that later, after the inspiration comes, so to speak. Third, don't give up. Some of the most famous authors received YEARS of rejection letters from publishing companies. Classes in writing don't hurt---and I find that I became a better writer by finding a teacher/professor who was willing to be honest enough with me to rip my writing apart: it was the only way I could learn to write better. Tell your teachers of your ambition--and ask them, if they could, to make any comments that might make you a better writer, even if it has nothing to do with the content of the assignment. That's my best advice for you.

You need a lot of talent. Choose a genre that interests most other people as well as you. Try to make your writing easy to read. Don't try to show off your amazing vocabulary because most readers don't want to read with your book in one hand and a dictionary in the other.
Get anything you can published anywhere you can because the more references you have, the more seriously publishers will take you. If a local magazine or newspaper has a serial or short story section try to get the editor to put something in from you.
Also, just in case you are not up to standard, remember that writing is more an art than a science and you may refine the craft but if you don't have the talent then you may have to go to plan (b) which could be journalism, for example.

To become an author, you need to have a book published (and to become famous), it needs to be a bestseller and you need to have a string of "hits".
Stephen King got his first works published in a magazine.
Sidney Sheldon used to write for television.
All authors started small and then built up a reputation. So check out various publications to see how you can submit your works to them.
A good way to do this would be to get a copy of The Writer's Digest which gives alot of magazines/publisher's and their criteria for submission of your work.
Good luck!! (And if you become famous, don't forget your old pal, JinkyMcNuts!!)
