I was reading a story where one of the character's references a time in history when in WWII the german and allied soldiers laid down their weapons and had a snowball fight for Christmas day. The next day they continued their fight. Is this true and could someone direct me to a valid reference where I can read it for myself?

The Christmas truce of ww1 1914 . Germans and British soldiers lay down there weapons and celebrated christmas together , they sung christmas carols, made a christmas tree and exchange gifts and even held a football (soccer) match this contineud till a few days after new years.
This was against orders. But the men were really in the christmas spirit. there were alot friendship made between the germans and the brit.

After that a brit soldier was bringing goodies to a german trench and when came back he got shot in the back by a german sniper. And before that some germans were also killed.

The fighting raged on after these incident.

I find it sad really.

It IS true that for Christmas Day they laid down their weapons and celebrated by singing carols and exchanging gifts (simple things like a cigarette for a chocolate bar or something). And they probably had snowball fights among themselves.

But it is uncertain if the Germans and the Allied soldiers had snowball fights with each other. That would be interesting to find out. If you do, let me know!

I don't know about a snow ball fight, but there is a book " Silent Night " by Stanley Weintraub. It is about an incident in WW I where Allies and Germans quit fighting and sang Christmas songs etc. on Christmas. Then continued fighting the next day.

True

There is a recent film out that is about this event: Joyeux Noël
Plot Outline: On Christmas Eve during world War I, the Germans, French, and Scottish are trying to make peace, so they bury their dead and play football

It is a very highly rated film, I realy enjoyed the entire film.

The film was originally supposed to be rated R. However, after film critic Roger Ebert criticized the rating, the MPAA officially changed the rating to PG-13.

Do rent this one! Esp students, teens....

I agree that this story originates in World War One. It is probably true - an unofficial multi-player football match happened at Christmas 1915, and that is well documented.
