He was one man with a few leaders who supported it. Most people didn't buy into it and didn't see the need or adopt the same 'vision' as he did. Gorbachov simply tried to do more than his leadership and resources could accomplish.

In a miniscule way, I understand. My own leadership skills involves a "follow me" but then I often attack a problem alone. One can't be a leader if the followers don't follow or follow all the way. That is why he isn't still in control.

Who said he failed? If you look at today's Russia, does it look anything like it was before Gorbachev? He started the change, for better or for worse.
