I bought this really cute leather belt but it is about four inches too long and I want to make it shorter without ruining it. Does anyone know how I can do this without ruining it?

Leather belts are easy. Just use a leather punch or awl and add additional holes. If you have to cut it down, make sure you know how to stain leather as the ends will have to be finished and restained.

Make a tidy hole where You need it - that does not ruin a belt.

There are special cutters for it but You can also use
a sharp knife and a nail ( hammer to drive trough -
You do not need such cutters often - so why buy ?).
The tip of the knife is turned around in the hole to scrape out and extend never driven trough ( that makes ugly cuts that can also tear out or get longer ). Make sure that the spaces between the old and the new hole are the same distance - if needed make more than one hole until You are at the right spot that You need for Your size.

If You are not god with such things and If the belt was expensive go to a saddle maker. He will still have the equipment to cut the holes.

Do not shorten a belt - that is easier to see and will spoil the appearance - besides that You may put on wight an need the other holes later ;-)

It depends on what you are wearing the belt with. If it is just with a jeans or skirt with belt loops, then just punch a few additional holes. It will still look great with the extra length as it can be kept in place with the belt loops. If your leather belt is wide and does not fit into the belt loops, then it will depend on the texture of the belt. If it is soft, you can still add another hole, fold up the loose end in a fashionable way. If it is of a stiffer texture cannot can't be folded or tucked away nicely, find ways of hiding the extra length like hiding it between ur belt and ur waist/clothes. If it still does not work, you might need to find a shoe/belt repair shop and have the extra length cut off and refashioned. Enjoy your new belt :)

Trimming off length of a leather end and saving the belt from damage wouldn't be easy. It would require tanning and buffing the leather (instructions in the link below). The closest you might come to approximating those results would be with a wood-burning pen. If you want to create an extra hole, use the same. Your best bet would be seeing a leather repair shop or shoe repair shop.

If you don't have a leather punch, you can take it to a shoe repair shop. They can punch the hole/holes for you. Depending on how the belt is made, they may also be able to trim the end and re-stitch it for you.

Buy a leather-hole-puncher, you can use it on almost anything and it will just add a hole instead of you cutting the belt.

A leather punch (or hammer and nails/screws) can take care of the belt holes

take a nail and punch some new holes in it. you don't want to cut off the excess leather, but you can create holes where you need them to be.
