My friend is always taking things that are said, by either friends or strangers, negatively. She is extremely defensive when ever anything is said. Our daughters play sports together, when someone ask what was wrong and mentioned that her daughter had a bad night the night before. She got extremely upset thinking that the lady was putting her daughter down, when she was only asking because she was concerned.

It sounds like there is something else going on here. I think that you best bet would be to back off and give her time to heal the other area.
If you feel comfortable you may want to try to get to know her better and create a friendship so you can help her out. She may just feel neglected, lonely, stressed out. There are a million reasons for her to react this way.
The number one thing to keep in mind is that you never know what is going on in somebody elses life.

She may be depressed and needs to regroup.. Make sure when she is with you and things are said to you, you respond positively and try to set an example. Or maybe she doesn't care what anyone thinks. If it bothers you enough and you still want to be friends, talk it out.

Maybe she is just insecure about something, ask what's wrong! Be a friend and tell her that you are just concerned.
