You need a hub. Better yet buy a router so you don't have to have one computer control the internet connection.
The rest is in the routers directions.
A non-wireless ehernet router run about 30 bucks brand new.
after that all you need is some really long cat 5 ethernet cables and your set.
Better off buying wireless router and new wireless cards for comp - it's what you will eventually do anyway and it shouldn't cost you more than a hundred bucks.

That is not what modems do. You need network ports.
Most modern computers have network ports. Look on the back of the computer for something that looks like a phone jack but wider. If your computers have those, you can use a crossover cable to connect them if you are just hooking up those two machines; or you can get regular network cables and an inexpensive multi-port switch if you plan to connect other computers or devices to your network later.
If your computers do not have network ports, you can buy network cards for them; usually they're $20 or less if you look for sales.
Once the computers are connected, you can run the Windows XP Network Setup Wizard and it'll walk you through configuring your network.

"Back in my day we made networks with 2400 baud modems...And we liked it!"
Strictly speaking, a network can be a point-to-point connection between two computers, and it can be done with modems. If both computers are in the same physical location, it's a pointless exercise. Use a cross-over ethernet patch cord between the ethernet ports on each computer, assuming they have ethernet ports. If you don't have ethernet, learn to have some fun with cables between serial ports on both machines (and maybe a null modem connector) and read up on "Direct Serial connection." You can go through the motions with Start, Settings, Network Connections, New Connection Wizard, Set up an Advanced Connection, Connect directly to another computer.
However, if you're a dweeb out to prove something, you'll need
--2 separate phone lines with different phone numbers. Connect the analog modem port from computer 1 to phone line 1, analog modem port from computer 2 to phone line 2. You can't just connect the two modems together because you need a phone system (or equivalent simulator) to provide line voltage, dial-tone, ringing voltage, answer supervision, etc.
--Follow the instructions in XP to enable incoming connections (Start, Settings, Network Connections, New Connection Wizard, Set up an Advanced Connection, Accept Incoming Connections, Select your modem). I recommend plugging in "Incoming connection" in your XP help facility and reading the related articles
--Follow instructions in XP to create a Dial-Up connection (Start, Settings, Network Connecions, New Connection Wizard, Connect to Network at my workplace, Dial-up connection). I recommend plugging in "Dial-Up" in your XP help facility and reading related articles.
--Use the dial-up connection from one computer to dial the other one.
