A psychiatrist is likely to prescribe anti-depressants only in very serious cases where the mother is a danger to herself. I believe St. John's Wort and other homeopathic remedies are not recommended for pregnant/nursing women but your doctor can counsel you on this.
Prenatal vitamins have a good dose of B vitamins which can help your overall mood. Exercise and enough sleep also help your serotonin levels.
If you are depressed during your pregnancy, you are also predisposed to post-partum depression. Get yourself a great counselor and hang in there. I also suffer from life-long depression and I know it's tough.

I have 4 children and know that you can take anti depressants while pregnant, but I would not take anything even over the counter until speaking with your ob. Every pregnancy is different and you never know what may hurt your baby. Your ob should be able to give you some good advice for prescription and over the counter meds that will work for your depression and still keep you and your baby healthy. Good luck with your new bundle of joy.

I would talk to your doctor about it. He'll know what's safe and what's not. He may be able to prescribe something, that works wonders, and is also completely safe for baby.
On second thought, pregnancy can change an awful lot, including your moods. I've suffered from depression, of some degree or another, most of my life. I only recently started taking medication for it. However, I was never anywhere near as irritable or depressed while I was pregnant.
Talk to your OB, he or she will know better than we'll be able to tell you. Plus, I would trust the word of an MD, when it comes to something as important as your baby.

Actually a lot of women think that herbs and such are OK to take while pregnant. Most are not. I would suggest talking with your doctor before taking anything. They can prescribe medicines that will help but only if they know there is a problem. Good luck

No, do not take st-john's worth.... It is a herb and while there is no medical proof of this, there were many cases where women claimed it made them abort.
A lot of doctors will prescribe celexa, commonly used to treat depression and anxiety. It does not go through the placenta and is safe to take.
Consult your doctor and and he can answer any questions you might have.
Do not take NOTHING that is not prescribed by the doctor.

i'm really not sure of herbal remedies, I would talk to your doctor, there are a variety of prescription medicines that can be taken for depression while pregnant. It sucks, I know, cause I have suffered from it, and your hormones only make it worse. Also, hope you are getting counseling. Good luck, hon.

You need to call a physician, only they can help you or the pharmacist may have some ideas but being pregnant he would also say to speak to a physician.

You absolutely need to consult your doctor before you take anything - especially homeopathic remedies - you have no idea how they may affect the fetus.
