Get something like that. A range extender. But you have to make sure it will be compatible with whatever wireless device you have.

You probably have a jack on the first floor (either cable or phone). You could place the router on the first floor easily. This does confuse me...why would you have a connection in the basement, but not on the main floor?

It doesn't even need to be hardwired (I don't think) to a desktop PC. But if you do want your desktop internet capable, and it is in the basement, then that would be an issue I guess. You can always buy a wireless adapter for the desktop, and put the router on the main floor.

I think you can by an antennae or signal booster at radio shack, put it on the first floor, or better yet buy 2 and put one in visual range of the router and one within visual range of the laptop. Hopefullyn there won't be two many floors or walls between them.

But if you need performance ryun a cat 5 cable direct from basement to second floor, it's easier than it sounds.
I would tell you to move the router but it sounds lke you can't, unless you run a phone cord from the basement to wherever you hide the router on the first floor, that would be even easier than drilling holes to reach the second floor.
Good luck!

check and see if there are eithernet cable jacks on your lap top and on the back of the router. [ they look like big phone jacks. ]
If so measure distance from router to laptop, purchase an extra long coil of the eithernet cable[ ends are already factory installed ] and that will give a strong signal constantly.
If the eithernet option is not going to happen, try to move the router as close to the first floor as possable. try to keep router away from as many metal furnice pipes and house wireing , as possable.

You need to buy a stronger router. Router's that cost near $100-150 should do the job.

Try moving the router antenna position slightly (in the basement) while someone watches your laptop signal strength upstairs.

look into buying a wireless repeater and putting it on the 1st floor. It will "amplify" the signal so the 2nd floor can access it

Just get another connection cable in the second floor than hook it up to another pc that will connect.
