No, there are no none-usb externals out there that don't require a secondary powersupply, right now only USB provides power through the cable. There are some out there which are USB which don't need a powersupply, but the larger more powerful ones still need this supply to run them.

USB ports don't have the power to run an external hard drive. Only small things like thumb drives. Everything else would need its own power.

No, not that I'm aware of. The hard drive needs more power than the USB port can provide.

yes there are many external drives that are USB powered.
