In the Movies???

It's gotta be Grease! I'll still watch it to this day.
And I'm straight!!!

In Broadway??

A Chorus Line...
Well... It's the only one I saw in Broadway.
I don't think many will object.

My HS did Anything Goes and it rocked. I go to a private musical/culinary school in StL. It was amazing though. Last sumemr i directed Seussical: The Musical. It amazingly attracted all ages. It was a huge success; and very easy to do. 2 ½ hrs, but its all good. Minimal set changing, only 4-5 big moving props on casters.
Lion King was really good.
Wicked was asi, asi.
All time fav is still Anything Goes.

I don't know the best but some famous/good ones are:
The King and I
The Sound of Music
My Fair Lady
West Side Story
Fiddler on the Roof
Also: I really LOVE High School Musical (it's my favorite), but you may only like that if you are a teenager.

On stage: "Grey Gardens" or "Light in the Piazza"

On film: "Cabaret" or "West Side Story"

I don't know if they're the "best" - but they're my favorites (this week LOL).
I think "Guys and Dolls" and "Gypsy" are considered the "best" musicals by critics and theatre scholars.

I have only seen about 35 of them live, but of the ones I have seen "Wicked" is by far the best. You will never look at the Wizard of Oz the same way again.

"Les Miserables" is also very good, as far as off- broadway goes "Urinetown" is very good.
