Interference is likely the cause. That can come from anything operating at the same frequency as your wireless device. Often, cordless phones will cause slowdown or disconnection from a wireless router. Test it by using a cordless phone while connected to your wireless router.

If you are in an apartment complex, it is very likely that interference from a neighbor's phone will cause the problem. It is not likely the computer. You can test the computer by taking it to a starbucks or anywhere with a (free) dedicated wireless signal and connecting there.

It isn't the computer, it's either the router, interference from a cordless phone, or someone piggybacking on your signal, if you live in an apartment building or complex. If you have a router and a cordless phone is near it, that can cause it.

If you have a router, call the router manufacturer, they will gladly help you with this. You may have to change the channel, but they will talk you through it.

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

If you have already switched to a cable modem or DSL, then it is not a problem with dial-up. You can try to "clean disk" and "defragment" your hard drive, and it may help.
