Its free java compiler, very nice and you can do applets & applications.

a compiler and a JVM to run the apps. A IDE with the java SDK like Eclipse. (IDE = Integrated Development Environment) is a text editor for writing programs. (SDK Software Development Kit) is the nuts and bolts of the programing language.. Good Luck

You can use the eclipse ide, or JCreator Pro both are free so its good to start out with and choose one you feel comfortable with after you learn the basics.
