On an automatic, if the gear stick is not in Park the car wont start. Could also be the starting motor. Incidentally is the battery connected??????.

lots of different things, first get someone else to see if the engine is turning over at all. If it is there could be a bad starter or a bad fuel injestion and spark next if there is no turning get some heavy gauge wire. Hot wire the starter. This may be hard to find. Look over the engine, there will be a pretty direct root from the batt to it.. If the belt and fan turn then the starter is working and you have a switch problem. If it doesn't i have no idea. look along the line to the starter. tHere should be a solenoid, skipr the solenoid with the heavy gauge wire, try turning the car on with the key. if it works the solenoid is the problem, continue in tis way for all components along route it the starter worked when hot wired. If it didn't work take it to the mechanic and get him to look through everything, you probably need a new starter. This will be time consuming and may be worth taking it to the mechanic. Watch out for the sparks if you are leaning in close to the wire when you hot wire it. where cotton or denim, not synthetics.
ohh one last thing before you do all of this, make sure to put the car into gear and then back into park. this will trip the computer to knowing it is in park then it may work

if everything is totally dead the battery can't be fine. if no lights whatsoever are coming on, the battery is either dead and needs a boost or you have a bad battery entirely. if the car is still not starting, even with the battery having some juice, it could either be bad connections (either to the starter or loose/dirty battery terminals and/or corroded terminal wires) or you have a bad starter. if the vehicle is turning over, it could be a bad fuel pump. in other words, with the limited info ur giving, it could be anything under the sun.

Have your alternator checked out - you may well have a good battery but if the alternator is not charging the battery you will have a dead car

It would have to be checked with a test-lamp just to see what is powered and what is not, assuming the battery and the terminals are O K It's not easy to diagnose a problem with so little onfo.

It sounds like it could be the starter motor but it's worth checking your fuses incase it's your car's immobiliser, this happened to me and it took me a while to fathom it out but go there in the end without the aid of male assistance!

do you hear the engine trying to start when you turn the ignition? If you do, it's probably the starter that is bad. If you hear nothing when you turn the key, it's the battery.
