Have you tried sticking the cent to a magnet? If it sticks, then it's not copper. If it doesn't stick, then you more than likely have a plated cent. If the cent feels 'slippery', then it's been plated with mercury and you need to get rid of it NOW! Mercury is VERY poisonous!!!

If you're talking about USA coins... Pennies have never had silver; and in 1964 they were 100% copper (no steel). 1943 was the one-and-only-year of steel pennies, as copper was needed for the war effort. (A web search will reveal some interesting stories about a few rare steel 1944 pennies too, but I digress.) So what kind of mint defects are you talking about?

As I remember there were experimental coins made back then of aluminum, but none were released and none are legal to own. It would be very light weight and not be as heavy as steel. Looks like some one fooled with your cent after it left the mint, for I doubt very much you have an aluminum one.

the '43 might have some value, and maybe those from the '20s, depending on condition...everything else is just a penny
