Throughly clean interior. Then place a bowl of water and heat to boiling, the steam will loosen any smoke particles, remove bowl thoroughly clean out steamy sides, repeat a couple of times.
Don't heat chemicals or vinegar.
If the odor still persist, try masking with an odor that will not adversely effect food (cinamon baking soda mix) and just heat til warm.
The steam method is the best bet.

If you are just setting the vinegar in the microwave it will not do anything. You need to heat it up for a couple minutes and it will remove the odors.

I wish you luck. I had this problem and got so disgusted I just through the dam thing out. I do know the best way to clean a microwave(not for smoke) but just cleaning is to take one large or two small sponges, fill them with water and put some dish soap on them then turn it on high for five minuets. When done all you have to do is wipe it clean. Good Luck.

Try washing the inside of the microwave with baking soda. Then leave a bowl of baking soda in the microwave overnight.

Microwave a bowl of lemon juice for about 2 minutes (keep an eye on it, I don't know how strong your micro. is) I used about half a cup of bottled lemon juice, it worked just great.
