My feeling is that the closest he got to Christianity, at least in a long time, was playing Rev. Cleophus James in the Blues Brothers movies.

He was an entertainer. His religion should not matter here in the United States. Religion is a private thing for most people. This privacy should be respected, especially for celebrities. Everything they do in public becomes common knowledge. Their private lives should be left to them.

The news accounts of his death mentioned that he was. Being a Christian doesn't make someone perfect, it only guarantees that they are forgiven for their sins. Since we are all sinners that's not a bad deal.

if he wasnt he wasnt a very good one. he married a woman who was married to someone else and then beat her a few years back.
