The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

My best solution has always been steam. Use a humidifier in a closed up room like your den or bedroom. ALso take a hot shower and drink warm/hot tea. The lemon and honey thing they say helps but simply the warm drink will be a good idea.

A good Herbal tea with some Lemon and Honey works well. Also buy a box of Emergen-C that comes in different flavors and is available at Walgreens, GNC, and other places. One packet in a small glass will knock out that cold. Eat a good chicken noodle soup and drink plenty of fluids and get some serious rest. Put on some movies and lay around in your sweats..

viruses cannot survive in a salty environment, so do the warm water/salt gargles at least 3 times a day.
Stuffy nose will respond to steam, as a few folks posted- hot bath or shower, chicken soup, hot herbal tea with lemon and honey is good, too.

Whatever the cause, here's how doctors say to make the most of a sore situation. 1 ) Suck on Lozenges containing zinc. 2 ) Drink lemon juice with honey in hot water or tea sipped through out the day. 3 ) If you can get Ricola herbal mint lozenges try it. 4 ) You can also try Halls Mentho - Lyptus drops. 5 ) Gargle frequently. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Gargle with warm salt water every hour. Even my doctor swears by it. And hot chicken soup -- really works. Especially if you put your head over the steam for a bit before eating it. It replaces a lot of the salts and things you need. Good luck!!

for the stuffy nose: put some toothpaste on your finger. then rub it all over your nose. leave it on for about five minutes. then you can take it off. it may burn but it helps.

You should drink lots of water but don't drink the cold ones ok. Also try NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc... for your sore throat. Water is really helpful so I hope it works on you. Advance happy new year. ^__^
