I dont think mermaids actually exist. It couldn't possible be true because how can a fish and human breed to make a half fish half human! Some people just claim it to get attention thats all.

A child can see and know much more than adults because he/she has a very pure spirit. But as the child gets older, he/she is being tainted by negativity from others and the environment. He/she began to lose the pureness and slowly lost the ability to see beyond what the eyes can't see, and to feel more than what meets the eyes. As adults, we conform to believe what others believe in order to fit in the society. There are so many other different forms of existence that we don't know of. What we can't see doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Human beings are not the only inteligent life forms there are.

I completely question the existence of mermaids but I do not rule out the possibility of their existence. But the likelier thing is that they are just a fantasy.
