I would have loved a home birth but the nearest midwife was almost 100 miles away. With my last son I had clearly written birth plan that I provided to my Dr. and the hospital. Very non invasive, low lights etc. My Dr was excellent and honored every wish I had even when I wasnt sure why I wanted it that way at the moment! I had all 3 of my boys via natural birth. It is a personal decision and you dont know what to expect until you are actually there. Pain tolerance, length of labor, size of baby etc are all things that come into play to make that decision. With my last one I changed my mind and wanted the epidural but it was too late. I went from 3 to 10 in 20 min (guess that is why I was so uncomfortable and wanted the relief!)
Best of luck to you!

If you are having a normal and healthy pregnancy, then home birth is okay...however, if this is your first, I would suggest a hospital birth. It would bring great piece of mind to know thta if anything were to go wrong, you have all of the medical technology right there at your fingertips. Also, it would be difficult to have a home birth when you don't really know what to expect. Even if you have a midwife there with you...there is only so much that they can do. For example, if your baby decides to come out breech, or if you have difficulty delivering and the baby gets stuck in the birth canal.
The method of pain management you want is completely your decision and is a very personal issue. Personally, I chose an epidural. I tried to labor naturally, but after almost 8 hours of back to back very strong contractions..I was exhausted! Once I got the epidural I was able to relax and even get in a little nap before it was time to start pushing. With my next one, I opted for the epidural asap. For me it was a much more enjoyable experience and I felt like I had more control.
With a home birth...if you feel that you are unable to continue naturally...you have no choice for an epidural or any pain medication at all. You can deliver naturally in a hospital and still know that you have options.
Just research it, think it over thoroughly and make the decision that you think is best for you.
Good luck and Congratulations!

it would depend on many things, but mainly on your pg and your health and the babies health. i had to do a hospital birth because my son was breech and would never move so i had a c section. but if you have an uncomplicated pg and have a doula or midwife and access to a nearby hospital in case of an emergency a home birth can be a wonderful experience.
on the pain management, just remember when the baby does finally arrive, and you are all warm and happy and snuggled together, there is no official that goes from room to room awarding medals of honor for natural birth and no pain meds. no one really cares how the baby got there, just that you are both ok. don't suffer needlessly. some women have a harder time than others, do what you need to do to fully enjoy the birth of your child.

HOSPITAL birth is SO much safer. There are literally hundreds of things that can go wrong and you should have the medical staff there if needed. My daughter went into distress and she was born c-section. I am SO glad I was in a hospital so it could be done. Nothing, not a single thing, is more important than a healthy baby. As for natural vs. epidural....I was ready for the epidural, but didn't make it that far. I did have a spinal block which is similar and it's not a bad experience for the actual procedure. I would look more at your pain tolerance and things. I know a few women who have done with and without and they said the nice thing with is was they weren't exhausted from the pain and pushing afterwards and they could just bond and snuggle with baby instead of pass out from pain. Hope that helps, good luck!!

I had my son 3 months ago. Had I chosen to have him at home, both he and I would have died. I have to have an emergency c-section as the chord was wrapped around his neck and he ingested merconium and stopped breathing and had to spend 8 days in the NICU. There are way too many things that could go wrong for someone not to choose a hospital birth - even if you want to go without pain killers. I highly recommend pain killers as well. You don't go to the dentist and have a root canal without novocaine, you don't have open heart surgery without anesthesia, why would you forgo an epidural? Risks are minimal.

That's your own opinion-which is better?-One man's trash is another man's treasure, so here's what I believe:
Hospital-you have to go by their rules, you have to stay in bed, you can't eat, you can't get up, baby is taken away from you at birth and sleeps away from you at night.
Home-you can do what you want, eat, sleep, walk, run, jump, take a bath, baby stays with you the whole time, never once is taken away (unless by other family members who want to see) you can video tape, take pictures, have as many people or as little people there as you want, and drugs are no option.
Obviously, I think natural at home.

It's up to you, but in my opinion, I feel hospital births are safer as they have all the equipment necessary if something should go wrong.
As for natural vs. epidural...EPIDURAL!!! lol I've done both, my first was drug free, my 2nd was with an epi...enjoyed the 2nd much more.
But it's all about what you're comfortable with. Good luck!

Statistically home birth and natural births have better outcomes for mom and baby. However nobody here can tell you what is best for you and your baby with no information.

it depends how close you are to a hospital. if it's near, then try to have your baby at home and have someone that can help you, like a doula. at a hospital though, they can help your baby immediately if anything is wrong when he comes out. it might be better to be there. you'll have to take him or her there later that day anyways for them to check him out. and natural birth is better for your baby because whatever you take goes to baby too. but if the pain is too much for you then don't hesitate to take the epidural. it hurts too but it'll make the pain go away. you'd definately need to be in a hospital for that though.
