This totally confused me,i built a amd3200+,384mb ddr ram,80gb hard drive,ge-force fx5500
this worked well until two days ago when it refussed to boot,i tried everything but i put it down to a motherboard failure,it was a 2nd hand socket A board so i thought i would get another socket A mobo from ebay and transfer the processor
however just before i was going to take the processor out (and dismantle it)i thought i would try booting it up one last time, and guess what,it booted up no problem
sp everything is fine now,but for one thing..if i leave it off for say"24 hours" ,when i try to boot it,it will start up for around 5 seconds and go off, this will happen for around 6 times(all this time there is no life from the monitor,i.e the light will stay orange on the 17"crt ),and around the 7th attempt the monitor will go green and the p.c will boot
what is stopping this from booting first time,i reckon its a hardware problem, but what do you reckon?

Probably the motherboard, but might also be the power supply. You may just have to play with different parts until it works stable.

It sounds like a hardware problem, but it could be a hard drive issue - as in its' not spinning up - the way to test this is to try and start i t up form A Floppy or CD - see if it starts then - if it does then it does then it is most likely HD Problem.

It's highly unlikely to be the Processor

The other thing to look out for is is it in a hot area this can cause them not to boot until thay have cooled

Another suggestion is is the onboard battery on the motherboard
try changing it - only cheap so wont break the bank !

Start Simple

try disconnecting all non essential devices to do a minimal startup - disconnect all your CD Drives , Keyboard , USB Devices etc, if it works then start plugging them back in 1 at a time (Make sure you power down first tho !)

And retry

Hope this Helps
As the monitor wont get a video signal from the PC COs it's not booting the light will stay orange

It happened to me with an old computer I had. Try to check if your memory is "well put" or securely installed. Push it a little more and see if all the power supply cables are securely connected. If your memory is not well installed or if it is loose, your computer will not boot. Also secure the other connections: hard disks, power supply, etc. Make sure also that the mobo has it's ground screws secured also. Not so tight, but not loose either.

It seems to me that there is a loose connection somewhere, most likely the memory and/or the power supply connections.

And if the motherboard is almost new, it should not have any loose connection inside. If after securing everything you are still having problems, I suggest to buy a new motherboard, and not used. If you buy another used mobo and it happens that it is faulty too, chances are that you are throwing away your money, and with all that money thrown away you should have bought it new in the first place.

I had an old computer that came with an internal loose connection at the motherboard, so I had to push the memory cards every time to boot it up. The guy that assembled it didn't gave me any warranties whatsoever. So, from that time I assemble my own computers. ;-D

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him, we tried everything to fix the stupid thing, and it turned out to be a bad power supply coming from the wall, we fixed the problem with a UPS. Best advice get the computer tested before sinking a lot of money into it.

Troubleshoot it.

Unplug all the peripherals, floppy, hard drive, all cards and cables inside except for power, memory, cpu, and video.

Try turning it on. If it works, you know its something you unplugged. If it doesn't work, you know is one of those things left.

Try swapping the memory around... How are the fans? Did you remove the cpu before? Did you re-insulate it? There are thousands of things it could be.

I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

Kick start it with a PSU with more power. Just think about the watts that have to run the dang thing.
