About 55% of people who are asked this question make up an answer. (Just making that up, of course).
There is a great quote on this subject: "I use statistics the way a drunk uses a lamppost - more for support than illumination"

About 55% of the time I will make up statistics just to prove my point. The other 45% of the time I will simply quote an unreliable sources statistics. 25% of the time I make up statistics just to have fun.

Heck, 86.7% of the stats that are given were thought of right at that moment 66.7% of the time leaving around 45% of the populatin wondering if 86% of the stats that they were given were correct 100% of the time... too much to think about.
And yes, I have made up stats just for fun.
