I have a 3 HP 15 Gallon Craftsman Air Compressor that I bought used. It is electric and supposedly "oil-free". When I plug it in and switch it on everything appears to work normally however the regulated side of the compressor will only go up to about 23-25 PSI and the tank guage will only go up to about 20-22 PSI. I have checked the drain valve and other areas where connections are made and can't find any leaks from the tank or regulator. Furthermore the motor never cuts off - it will run forever if I let it. I even let it run for 15-20 minutes straight and once the guages got up to the above readings, they stopped and the motor kept running. Is the compressor or other part of the motor just shot or am I overlooking something here?

Yes you have not checked the compression ring. I will bet they are shot. My brother had the exact same model. The head is pretty easy to get on and off. Get a proper size compression ruing and a ring compressor and rebuild it. Sears will give you a print out of the schematics if you don't have one if you can get to a Sears Service center. Hope that helps.

You might try either taking it to a repair shop or trying to get your money back. If you cannot find a leak anywhere, then there may be a worse problem. I had one do the same thing once and the piston had a hole in it. Wouldn't let the tank fill up. This may not be the case with yours however. A shop that works on air equipment might charge 20-30 to check it out. Your call as to if it's worth it or not. Good Luck.

Here are a few things to check.
1) Check for belt slippage
2) Check the inlet filter on the pump
3) Assuming the first 2 items are ok, and there are no air leaks. Perform a compression test on the outlet of the pump to determine if the pump is in need of repair.

an oil free compressor uses a rubber like bladder to pump the air into the tank and pressurize it. sounds like the bladder either has a small hole in it or it may not have a good seal around the seat of it. you can get reapair parts from sears for it and it will come with installation instructions or you can take it to a repair center and let them fix it.

Providing there are no air leaks get a rebuild kit for that model from Sears, an easy fix.
