What did you think of it? Does it live up to the reputation of Final Fantasy 7 ?

Well, Final Fantasy VII was unique in its own special way. It built a love for its characters, especially Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris. Then, it systemically tore down the world around them.

Aeris, a very engaging, sensitive, and beloved character was killed in front of her potential love interest, in a heart-wrenching scene, and the music that plays adds further to the sadness one feels. The fact that she was a very important, lovable, young, and innocent character made it that more real that she died. Also, the scene where Cloud submerges her body is a beautiful scene.

Cloud, the classic stoic protagonist one expects of a Final Fantasy installment, finds the life that he remembers may not be real. He is unsure of himself, unsure of his actions, and doubtful of what he is capable of. He slips into a coma, and the rest of the team is left to fend for themselves without their leader.

Tifa, the endearing but fiery childhood friend of our protagonist, finds her fear of Cloud's past and how it may hurt him, raging inside of her. She alone knows the "truth" of Cloud's past, and how incorrect his constant assessments are. Yet, she says nothing because she fears for her friend's safety. Also, she is forced to watch as she realizes that her unspoken love for Cloud is never to be realized as soon as Aeris comes into the picture. The love triangle that they engage in slowly pushes Tifa out, as Aeris becomes closer and closer to Cloud.

FFVII had so much drama, betrayal, deceit, and so many other interesting aspects that SquareEnix would be hard-pressed to ever create another title to live up to it.

Now to Final Fantasy XII. I have not finished the game, but I believe that I know enough to say whether or not it has a good storyline. Well, the style of the game has returned to the concept of kingdoms and Old English. Some of the characters' style of speaking is extremely dramatic, especially Princess Ashe and Captain Bashe, but it doesn't take away from the appeal of the characters. All the characters are lovable, and you care about most of them. However, some are left out a little. Penelo, with the exception of her possible love interest in Vaan, is not very involved in the story. Fran isn't, either, except an accessory to the sky pirate, Balthier.

So far, I have encountered no really dramatic aspects of the game that would make me say that it compares to FFVII. The main character is presented as Vaan, but it seems as though the true main character is Princess Ashe. The majority of the story centers around her, and her quest to claim the throne of Dalmasca, freeing her kingdom from the tyrannical rule of the Archadian Empire.

Another interesting aspect is the presense of Lord Larsa, the adolescent brother of the central antagonist, Lord Vayne. He seems to be working both sides of the fence, but my belief is that he is ultimately a good guy who simply cares for his older brother, which explains his lack of clear motives toward the situation. However, I believe that his love for his brother will ultimately be his downfall.

Another matter of interest I have recently encountered is the Occuria, who are mystical and immortal purveyors of the land of Ivalice. They ask Princess Ashe to forcibly reclaim her throne by destroying the Archadian Empire and an heretic who betrayed them by the name of Venat. They give her a great weapon to help in this task. They seem very evil and destructive, and they seem to have no regard for human life.

Besides those aspects, there is nothing intensely marvelous about the storyline. However, I do not suggest that you do not play the game. By all means, it is a very engaging game. Its storyline just could stand to be improved slightly.

My question being why is everything being compared to 7? Yeah, it was a good game. But not everyone loved it, so why should all other FF games forever be compared to it?

I haven't gotten too far into it but so far it's interesting. I like it. So far there haven't been any major twists like all the other games. I love the FF series for those out of nowhere twists. I'm hoping for one sometime soon! But I'm addicted to my new Wii so hopefully I can pull myself back into 12.

i do like it. In fact, i like how the story revolved upon much grander scale. Kinda sick and tired watching Final Fantasy characters being lovey dovey on each other (Starting from VIII to X).
