Finding a job you love. Even if it may mean less money. Life is too short for regrets.

From the information you provided, it sounds a bit risky to quit your job right now. Since you have been there for so long, and I'm assuming you have good work relationships since you love it, perhaps you can ask your boss to work out a new schedule with you so you can have a little bit of both worlds. You can ask for flex time (show up to work at 6:00AM so you can leave earlier and have more time with the kids) or to add an hour to your workday for 2 weeks so you can have every other Friday off, or even do some work from home (this would require setting up dedicated "work hours" in a quiet room with no interruptions, though). What it really comes down to is what is best for your family's happiness and security - if you continue working, you won't have the added stress in your life of the "what-ifs" regarding your husband's job security and finding another less-satisfying job when you do want to go back or if a lay-off forces you to go back earlier than you wanted. However, if you're not crazy about your childcare situation or you're truly stressing that your children will be worse off because you aren't at home, then it may be best to take that risk. However, I would plan as though you are NOT going to go back to work in 5 years since there is no guarantee...if you and your husband make plans around your not going back for at least 10 years, then whatever you get after 5 years will be a bonus and not an added stressor. You have to decide what YOU want to do, and then if that decision is still the best way to provide for your kids. Good luck, and remember that you can make it work no matter what you decide to do.

I work for a (mostly) good company, in an okay job. I definitely don't love it, and only rarely do I hate it. I work with great people, travel a bit, and don't have too much stress. I would love to do something more creative with my career - art or photography - but couldn't maintain the lifestyle that I enjoy.

I can take off with my husband for a weekend away, or play a round of golf, eat an expensive gourmet meal or buy a bunch of new clothes whenever I want. I can hire a cleaning person so I can enjoy my time out of work to the fullest. I wouldn't be able to do things like that if I was a starving artist. Of course you can be happy without the money, but I do enjoy indulging myself.

I always say that work is not my life - The only reason I work is to make my life outside of work more enjoyable.

So you need to decide which is more important to you - your life at work or your life outside of work.

I have been in jobs/places that I hate, and it definitely carries over into your personal life. You don't want to be in a job that you totally hate under any circumstances. The trick is to find something that you are okay with doing, and will give you potential to maybe try something else when you feel the need to do something different.

Good luck!

I am currently working for a good company doing something I hate and I think finding a job you love is soo much more important♥ I love my job before this one, but $$$ always gets in the way. Darn bills!

I'm a creative working for an investment bank and I despise what I do!! For the most part, the people are fine..I guess. The job itself stinks. I wish I'd stuck with what I went to school for!!!

Having a job you love is way more important than working for a 'good company'. My New Year's resolution is to find a job I can be excited about and proud of.

Ahh You have asked the 64 thousand dollar question. Of course we would all rather be getting paid for what we LOVE to do, but unfortunately bills get in the way of that. It is especially hard on men because they have a wife and kids that they have to take care of. My suggestion is, if you don't already know what it is that you would love to do, figure out what it is and set a goal. Work towards it! Keep the job you have now and everyday work toward your dreams! It may seem like a long hard road, but in the end you will be so glad you traveled it!!! Best of wishes and good luck in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!

From experience...you have to do something you love. If the company is so "good," maybe there's another position within it that is better suited for you. Bottom line...you will kill yourself if you stay in a job that you hate. Your perfomance will suffer, and, ulitmately, no one wins. There will be days that you are going to dislike any job, but those should be fewer than the days that you actually enjoy going to work! Good luck!

IS there a third option??
Like having a job??

Ideally one would like the job at least somewhat, but in this day and age, you cannot really hold out till you find the job you love. At least not most of us.

If you are in a job you hate.. KEEP LOOKING for a better job, but don't sit around unemployed.

Find the job you love. It makes sense for so many reasons:

1. You will derive great personal satisfaction from doing it.
2. Because you love it, you'll naturally work harder.
3. Because you love it, you'll naturally do it better and get raises and advance faster.

Happiness is always more important than money!
