I have several computers, 1 base unit & 2 laptops, but we have 5 people using all the above, I can easily create network drives for our documents, but it's a little harder when it comes to settings for email etc...

any suggestions

under XP pro there is a text box for profile location, I have copied my profile to a shared folder but I'm not able to use it effectivly.

does this feature require an additional tweak to work?

Roaming profiles requires a domain controller. No way around that.

The only thing you can do is redirect certain folders to a common location like My Documents and such, but as you said, email settings and such will always be a problem.

No it can't work that way, you'd be better off having one of the pc's setup as a domain controller if you require that kind of functionality.

You need a server Operating System with User Accounts etc sorry.

Ive run a email server for multiple users at home, there are quite a few available, though configuring them can be interesting.
